Jerold fumed as he sat behind a truck loaded with crab traps and angrily slapped the steering wheel. A wreck on the two-lane highway had traffic backed up for miles, and he was two hours behind schedule thanks to the local volunteer fire department getting their truck stuck blocking the road.

The Weres handled the delay by reading, listening to music on their phones, or in Taylor’s case sleeping. Jerold resented the former soldier's ability to fall asleep instantly. He ground his teeth, willing the tow truck to move the firetruck so he could get his team deployed in time to have the packages secured before daylight.

The last thing he needed was for someone to see him moving them once it was light. That was the fastest way to get an army of mundanes mobilized and searching in the shortest time. With the limited number of roads in the area, there was no way he could avoid discovery and having to fight his way out.

“About fucking time,” Jerold muttered when the truck in front of him lurched into motion.

He followed the heavily laden pickup truck going well below the speed limit for several miles before traffic in the opposing lane cleared enough to pass.

In an adolescent fit of anger, Jerold rolled his window down and gave the white-haired driver of the truck a one-fingered salute as he drove by. The elderly fisherman honked his horn, released the steering wheel, and returned the gesture twofold.

Jerold grunted when he heard a low snicker from the back of the SUV but didn’t allow himself to get distracted further as he pushed the vehicle up to eighty.

“Not gonna get there any faster if you get pulled over,” Alex offered.

Jerold responded by accelerating to eighty-five.

Twenty minutes later, he pulled off the road and down a dirt track that was more potholes than road. The rough ride forced him to slow the vehicle to a crawl if he didn’t want to damage it.

Minutes later, he pulled up in front of an old fishing camp that had burned in the distant past. This spot was the closest he could get to the target house and keep his activities from the sight of a nosy onlooker.

“The house is about a quarter-mile straight through the swamp. Taylor has a map and compass to keep you on track and another map to bring the merchandise here in the boat they have.

“Remember to keep the five I told you alive and ready to travel. If you need to make an example use the fat one. Avoid that if possible, and we can get paid for all six. Any questions?” Jerold finished.

He motioned toward the dark swamp when none came, and the group headed out in silence. Seconds later, the only evidence of their passing was the nocturnal animals slowly returning to their activities after the apex predators passed.
